Ruscilli was selected by Hocking College to oversee the design and construction of their new 402 bed student housing facilities. The landscape of this College offered several challenges that required extensive planning and problem solving by the project team. Two residence halls were safely constructed on the side of a hill containing mine shafts abandoned in the 1930’s. The mines had to be grouted and a deep foundation was put in place for the two structures. A cost effective approach was implemented using a steel staggered truss system to frame the two seven-story buildings with a minimal amount of columns. While designing to a tight budget, our team developed a solution that accommodated the adverse site conditions and incorporated the “Green Building” requirements. Construction was executed with minimal disruption to ongoing college activities.
